As we all know by now, the CDC is highly suggesting that everyone wear a face mask to help stop the spread of COVID-19 but do they protect you against getting the Coronavirus?
We have been told to wear a face mask to protect other people we come in contact with. Now there is more evidence that masks do protect you as well.
If you come in contact with an infected person and you are wearing a face mask, even a cotton face mask, you will reduce the virus that your body takes in. Breathing in even a small amount of the Coronavirus may lead to one of two things – no disease or a mild form of the disease, which your body could possibly fight off. Without a face mask you will be hit with the full force of the virus droplets which could result in serious symptoms or even death.
“There is this theory that facial masking reduces the amount of virus you get exposed to and disease severity,” said Dr. Monica Gandhi, medical director of the HIV Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and UC San Francisco professor of medicine.
Masks are essential for people to wear when they go out in public, such as shopping or medical appointments, and when close contact with other people in any situation.
Many stores, casinos, doctor’s offices, businesses and restaurants are requiring that you wear a face mask to cover both your nose and your mouth. If you schedule a manicure or a pedicure, you will be required to have your temperature taken at the door, wear a face mask and also wash your hands upon entering the spa or salon.
Wearing a face mask is just common sense and doesn’t require that much on our part. Some members of society fight wearing a face mask claiming their rights are being violated. Would you go out of the house without clothes on? Wearing clothes is required and it protects your fellow American just like wearing a face mask helps to protect other people you come in contact with.
In conclusion, the reason why wearing a face mask is so important is to control the spread of the Coronavirus, period. Wearing a mask can protect you from the more severe version of the Coronavirus disease.
