How to Open Clamshell Plastic Packaging
You know you are going to get gifts that come in clamshell packages and you are going to look like this lady and ruin your teeth. There is a simpler way of opening these hard plastic, sometimes airtight packages.
Believe it or not, thousands of people get hurt with punch wounds by trying to open clamshell, plastic packages. A clamshell package is what some products are packaged in to deter shoplifters, protect the item when it is shipped, and allow you to see the item clearly before purchasing it. Some common items that are packaged in clamshell packaging are electronics.
Clamshell packaging is typically made out of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC is it is generally referred to, which is considered the most environmentally damaging plastic around. Its production releases toxic chemicals that make their way into our food supply and it’s difficult to recycle. PVC makes the packaging sturdy and super clear.
However, it can be a royal pain in the butt to open a product that is packaged in clamshell packaging so you will want to know some things you can do to protect your hand and make it less frustrating to open something like this. Before you try to tear it open with your teeth or cut it with scissors and possibly hurt yourself watch this video that shows you how to use a can opener to safely open a clamshell package.
But, before you break out your can opener, check to see if the packaging has any tiny tabs or perforations. And, there are other alternates to using a can opener to open clamshell packaging. There are actually tools that have been designed just for the task. Products like the iSlice, Open It, and Pyrannia will all do the job. And, those product openers are cheap too. They usually sell from $5 to $10 each and that is much less than a trip to the emergency room.
Zibra ZPCOPEN-OR Open It Universal Package Opener $10.00
A short retractable blade digs into the plastic to create an opening. Another embedded blade finishes the job. You might get nicked if you lose control, or hurt yourself on plastic edges, since your fingers are partly inside the package. It does not easily maneuver around corners.
Pyranna Plastic Package Opener $9.95
This one uses an internal blade and wheel. You grip Pyranna, squeeze it around the edge of the clamshell, and slide it towards you. It works on straight edges, and it’s almost impossible to cut yourself. But it’s not maneuverable across bumps or around rivets, and it requires ample hand strength.
Harold Import iSlice Opener $4.50
An almost imperceptible, safe-to-touch ceramic blade pokes out of the side. Press down, and the blade cuts. Works okay on thin plastic; less so on thick.
Whether you use a can opener to open your clamshell plastic package or get a tool made just for that purpose just be careful this holiday season so you don’t find yourself in the emergency room instead of sitting at home enjoying the gift you received.
